Submission Guidelines
Submissions
Trial articles
Published Trial articles must conform to article submission guidelines. Submissions should be sent to the editorial offices for consideration, or email trial@justice.org.
Each month, Trial focuses on a specific theme, like products liability, medical negligence, or employment law. The themes and submission dates are listed in our current editorial calendar.
Verdicts & Settlements
Verdicts and settlements can be submitted and evaluated for possible inclusion in Products Liability Law Reporter or Professional Negligence Law Reporter, or Trial’s Verdicts & Settlements section. By submitting your case to AAJ, you are certifying that the information provided is not subject to a secrecy order or a confidentiality agreement. Submit your case by emailing law.reporter@justice.org
Content
Trial articles should deliver practical guidance, strategic insights, or lessons learned that readers can apply in their own practices. Focus on actionable insights rather than abstract or highly technical discussion.
Write for a national audience.
Avoid relying on authority from a single jurisdiction. When applicable, frame legal principles in terms of majority/minority rulings and support them with citations from multiple jurisdictions.
Avoid case summaries and “war stories.” Use case examples only to illustrate broader takeaways.
Writing Style
Clarity and readability are essential.
Be concise and direct. Use plain English and avoid unnecessary legal, scientific, and technical jargon. Write in an engaging, conversational tone using active voice. Avoid clichés. Use subheads to organize content.
Authorship and Originality
Trial publishes only original, previously unpublished content. Please do not submit any article that is under consideration by another publication or that has been published previously.
Ghostwritten or PR-authored articles submitted on behalf of another are not accepted, even if prepared with input from an attorney.
Submissions must reflect the author’s original work and professional judgment. Articles generated wholly or substantially by artificial intelligence tools are not accepted. AI tools may be used only for limited, non-substantive purposes (such as confirming that a sentence is grammatically correct) but not for drafting, analysis, or substantive editing.
Authors must be free from pending disciplinary action in which a public finding of probable cause, or a similar determination, has been made. Articles by authors who have been disciplined will not be selected for publication except for good cause.
Length
Articles should be 1,700 to 2,500 words (approximately 6 to 10 double-spaced pages), including citations. Sidebars and symposium pieces should be shorter.
Endnotes and Citations
Follow the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation (7th ed.), including using authors’ first names in cites. Cite only to West reporters—do not include parallel citations to state reporters.
Place all citations as endnotes at the end of the manuscript using Word’s “Insert Endnote” tool. Submissions with in-text parenthetical citations or footnotes at the bottom of pages will be returned unedited for reformatting.
Biographical Sketch
Please provide only your name, title or firm position, firm name, city, state, and (optionally) email address.
Peer Review
All Trial submissions undergo double-blind peer review and must pass review before proceeding to editing. The process typically takes two to four weeks.
Editing
Accepted Trial articles are edited for clarity, accuracy, style, and readability. Edited drafts are emailed to authors for review and approval before publication. Final approval is required before publication, and timely author response is essential to meet publication deadlines.
Trial Online Publication
Trial articles accepted for publication will appear in print, in the magazine’s digital edition, and on AAJ’s website, www.justice.org.
