Asbestos

Asbestos exposure can have deadly consequences and has been linked to various cancers, including mesothelioma. Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous material which is easily separated into thin, microscopic threads. These fibers are strong, flexible, heat resistant, do not conduct electricity, and perhaps most importantly to the thousands of companies who have used them, are very inexpensive. As a result, industry has long recognized the desirable properties of asbestos in various materials and settings. Unfortunately, the dangers have also been evident. From the Industrial Revolution through the 1980s, many companies used asbestos in applications and products. Consequently, laborers and consumers have been exposed to its toxic properties and are still at risk to develop asbestos-related diseases. The Asbestos Litigation Group was formed in 2009, and members primarily handle cases involving an individual’s exposure to asbestos and subsequent diagnosis of mesothelioma. The Group hosts meetings at the AAJ Annual and Winter Conventions and provides tools and resources necessary to successfully litigate their asbestos cases. Group members network and discuss legal issues and strategies on the Group's plaintiff-only list server and at regular meetings, including AAJ Conventions and Education seminars on asbestos litigation issues.
