Stroke is currently the number one cause of long-term disability and the number four cause of death in the United States. On average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds, and the incidence of stroke is projected to increase dramatically. Moreover, the costs of stroke care are projected to double by 2020. Despite recent innovations that have been shown to dramatically improve the outcome after acute stroke, 25 percent of stroke victims still do not receive the medical care they need.
