Improper treatment of urinary tract infection
March/April 2021Doe was admitted to a health care facility’s long-term care unit. At the time of the admission, Doe suffered from dementia, high blood pressure, and convulsions. He also had a history of recurrent urinary tract infections.
Doe was later diagnosed as having a urinary tract infection. A treating physician’s assistant allegedly ordered an antibiotic; however, the medication was ineffective because Doe suffered from a bacterial strain resistant to the antibiotic. Although a nurse allegedly notified the physician assistant or one of Doe’s treating physicians about this, Doe was not prescribed another medicine for his infection. He died approximately one month later.
Suit alleged negligence against the health care facility.
The parties settled for $275,000.
